GARAB GHAR

In October the J5 went on a short team building outing. The Afghan National Army has their training center (much like Great Lakes for the Navy) in Kabul. Within that base is a mountain that we are allowed to climb named Garab Ghar. Ghar means mountain. On one of our Friday mornings that we have off, we all went to this other base to hike up the mountain.

This is the starting point. Kabul is about 6000 feet above sea level.

About half way up the mountain we came across this old insurgent fortification. It is an impressive sight for both the fact that someone had to build this on the side of a mountain and that the coalition is ousting insurgents from posts like these every day.

Here is the J5 group photo inside one of these fortifications.

And here are a few pictures of us at the top of the mountain.

  1. Matthew,
The picture of your standing on the top of a hill holding the US Flag against a background of arid wilderness brought tears to my eyes. Over the 235 years of our country's history it has stood for the right of men and women to pursue happiness, as they see it, under the guidance of God Almighty. We at home often forget that, those like you and your brothers and sisters is arms, stand in harm's way to give us that right. I pray that those, like your, who fight for our country, at the direction of our citizen government are not sacrificed in vain.
    love
